Tower, The Experts Study the "Plan" for Reopening
(PISA, Italia, 16 March 2001)
by Cirano Galli
PISA The Leaning Tower, once the work is finished and the yard cleaned up will return for the enjoyment of visitors. This seems to be the wish of all as, in these 11 years of forced closing, the admirers for the "old girl" have not been missing. Today, past the danger of collapse thanks to the subexcavation operation, the Officer of Public Works, Nerio Nesi, has thought about its possible reopening to the public.
Yesterday morning, in a reception room of the Work of the Pisan Primaziale, that has for centuries cared for all the artistic patrimony of the Piazza dei Miracoli, the Technical Committee has taken office that will detail the formalities of reopening of the Tower to the public in conditions safe for visitors. The committee, coordinated by the general manager of the Office of Public Works, Marcello Arredi, is composed of the Prefect Paul Padoin, mayor Paul Fontanelli, president of the Work of the Primaziale Pierfrancesco Pacini, the Superintendent of the Cultural Good, architect William Malchiodi, the coordinator of the Committee for Safeguard of the Tower, Michele Jamiolkowski, and the commander of the Officers of the Fire Joseph Romano.
The interventions that followed during the first reunion have served to deepen the problem relative to the possible reopening of the bell tower, fixing a subsequent meeting for next April 5 at the end of which definitive proposals for reopening the Tower to the public will be made. To better clarify this delicate matter, the same committee has detailed a small group of technicians that will effect a overview to analyze the necessary elements for safety of the visitors.
In the afternoon, in rooms of the Primaziale, another meeting was held to agree upon the program of the celebrations of 16 and 17 June in which Andrew Bocelli will participate, among others.
