Piazza del Duomo
with the Principal Monuments

On the "Filed of Miracles" there are:
The round Baptistery with the double dome (Diotisalvi of Pisa, 1153)

The Cathedral (Buschetto, 1063)

The Leaning Tower (Bonanno, 1174, Maestro Gillo, Tommaso of Pisa)

The City Cemetery (Giovanni di Simone, 1278)

The Pisa mountains are in the background, the lowest of which is "the mountain on account of which the people of Pisa cannot see Lucca"

The Tower
One of the finest bell towers of the
Middle Ages (1174 and the most
characteristic as a leaning tower
(54 meters high - displacement 4.3 meters)

Galileo carried out the first experiments
with falling bodies on this tower,
which were the forerunners of the
following triumphs in physical sciences.

The Cathedral
The Cathedral was built in 1063 to celebrate
the victory of the people of Pisa against
the Saracens at Palermo.

There was a villa of Emperor Adrian in the
same place. Rainoldo, who built the facade
and Buschetto, who built the Cathedral, were
both local artists.

The predominating style is Romatic with
Eastern details. There is a Byzantine
elliptic dome with a Gothis covered
gallery at the side porch.

General View
This is a NE section of the City,
approximately one-fifth of its total
extension, which includes the four divine
monuments, framed by the embattled walls.

The elegant engineering school, belonging
to the famed Pisa University, can be seen
in the foreground.

In the backgournd, note the mountains
"which prevent the Pisans from seeing Lucca",
as Dante said in his poem.
