Show and Conference on the Restoration of the Bell Tower The grand display will unfold in May in the United Nations Palace of Glass By Marco Barabotti PISA. The Tower of Pisa"flies" in the United States represented to the world as more beautiful and, moreover, healthier, after ten years of protective interventions. The appointment is in New York, next May, for an event titled "The Leaning Tower of Pisa. Ten Years of Restoration". The event includes a show and the organization of a conference on the methodology applied by the scientific Committee for the Safeguard of the Tower. Numerous agencies have participated: the Province of Pisa, the Office for the Cultural Good, Superintendent for the artistic Good of Pisa and Livorno, State Department, Permanent Mission from Italy to the UN, Italian Institute of Culture to New York, Office of Infrastructures and Transports, Commune of Pisa, Tuscany Region, Primaziale Work, Normal School, University of the Studies, Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio Bank of Pisa, Tuscan Airport, Foundation Sipario Tuscany. Yesterday morning, at a press conference presenting the event, the following have taken part, the president of the Province Gino Nunes, the president of the Scientific Committee Michael Jamiolkowski, the provincial and town aldermen Aurelio Pellegrini and Fabiana Angiolini, the vice-president of the Work Primaziale Ottavio Banti. The show and conference on the restoation of the Bell Tower of the Pisa Cathedral is part of the initiatives of cultural exploitation and of promotion of the territory named "America!", that the Province had inaugurated in 1996. Both the initiatives of "The Leaning Tower Pisa. Ten Years of Restoration" will center on the methodologies used by the Committee for the Safeguard of the Tower, so as to distribute the Italian "know-how" on restoration and maintenance for such cultural treasures. New York will also benefit from exposure to the discoveries of the restrored ancient ships found during the excavations of St. Rossore, accompanying the technical-scientific exhibit that illustrates the techniques and technologies of the restoration, including a purely scientific analysis of the Tower of Pisa, using "language" destined for the normal public visitors (it is intended to be an attraction for tourists), while the conference is destined for professionals. The show, edited by the architect Alessandro Sonneti, will be held in the "Public Lobby" of the General Secretariat Building of the United Nations, from May 6 until 15 June 2003. The theme will be presented to the public in multimedia form in a cylindrical island with the dimensions of one of the floors of the bell tower, at 1:2 scale, on the inside of which will be exhibited a deeper explanation of the various phases of intervention, restoration and consolidation, with technical panels and three-dimensional models to illustrate the tecnology applied. The conference, that will be held along side in the "Dag Hammarskjold Library Auditorium", inside the Palace of Glass, will be the occasion for a public meeting of professionals - architects, engineers, geotechnicians - to "export" the Italian technical-scientific expertise on the restoration, directly through the "Leaning Tower" model. Interest regarding the Tower and its circumstances continues to grow beyond the present confines: to president Nunes, returning from a trip to China with the Union of Italian Provinces, requests have arrived for the demonstration to be mounted from the Vice Mayor of Pechino and from the mayor of Shangai. |
